Looking for an idyllic country retreat, a classic golf course, conference venue, and great trout fishing with all the conveniences and upmarket style of the city? Gowrie Farm at Nottingham Road in the KZN Midlands has all this to offer, with a varied selection of affordable and de luxe accommodation available. Being situated at the hub of the popular Midlands Meander tourism route ensures myriad restaurants and coffee-shops, spas, diverse shopping and cultural attractions as well as numerous sporting opportunities.

Gowrie Farm was historically the home to Charles Smythe – Natal’s first Prime Minister. It was first established by the Scotsman John King who settled there in 1858. In the 1920’s Gowrie Farm was also home to a nine-hole golf course.
Guy Smith, an attorney from Pietermaritzburg who developed Prince’s Grant, and Jubbs Greene, a local farmer, developed Gowrie Farm in 2006 as a residential estate and golf course set on a working farm.
In 2007 the nine-hole golf course was designed and built. The course was built in the traditional manner with push-up greens and rugged bunkers. These features were inspired by some of the classis courses visited by Guy on his trips to Scotland, Ireland and the Untied States. The most striking feature being the eighty-three wild bunkers, which add interest to this natural layout. Gowrie Farm is a walking course, unlike most modern golf estates, which allows one to enjoy the beautiful setting, and is very much in keeping with the lifestyle of this region.

To compliment the golf are four trout dams situated around the farm and golf course. Abutting the farm is Brookedale Health Hydro, well known for it’s outstanding service and day spa, which is open to residents of Gowrie Farm. Five kilometers from Gowrie Farm is Fordoun Spa, which has recently been recognized as South Africa’s premier spa and hotel.
Gowrie Farm has been designed for those who seek a simple country lifestyle with some of the essential elements of modern living. It provides a complete breakaway from stressful city life, yet remains within easy commuting distance to some of the major centers, being one and a half hours from Durban and approximately four hours from Johannesburg. An added attraction is that it is ten minutes from schools such as Michealhouse, Clifton and Kings, with Treverton a little further away.
In addition to the amenities that are available on Gowrie Farm there are a number of Midlands attractions within easy driving distance. These include shopping and dining on the Midlands Meander, fishing in some of the finest trout waters in the country, the Karkloof canopy tours - a unique eco-experience that takes one on a three hour tree-top adventure though the magnificent indigenous Karkloof forests. The canopy tour involves traversing from one platform to another along a steel cable suspended up to thirty meters above the forest floor. The scenery and bird life is spectacular and knowledgeable guides provide interesting facts throughout the tour. It is an experience not to be missed.
