Golf is not the only thing on our minds when we arrive for our weekly games. The landscape is a changing. The new fairways, tee boxes and greens are taking shape at a rapid rate. The bunkers too. Forgive us if we take too long on the 3rd green and walk ever so slowly to the 4th tee box, we’re just curious and super excited to see the momentous developments to our course.
The last official Thursday golf competition at Gowrie was a 12 hole Betterball Stableford. Why 12 holes? This format stretches new players beyond their comfortable 9 holes and also introduces them to all the holes on the course. A bonus is that hole 18 is played as a par 3 from the 100m stake after the 9th green! Much less daunting than the real thing! Wilna du Plessis and Nicola Frickel won o.c.o with 30 points. Daryl Fainsinger and Kath du Preez were runners up.
Ladies Golf at Gowrie is now played on a Wednesday morning. Kath du Preez won the first Wednesday competition with 41points, and Daryl Fainsinger scored 39.
Bosch Hoek kindly hosted 12 of us ladies when Gowrie was undergoing spring treatment. Playing the very different (and magnificent) course was a challenge and a most enjoyable experience. Thank you, Brad Ross and your team. The Three Ball Alliance, with 2 scores to count, was won by Carmen Seele, Michelle Burger and Deidre Clarke.
The Jonson’s Property Group sponsored Friday competition on 21 October, was won by two ladies who played phenomenal golf. Sarah Ellis and Wilna du Plessis scored 49 points. Deidre Clarke conquered her fear of the 4th by landing closest to the pin.
The Pantry (Nottingham Road) sponsored golf on 26th October. Thank you, Georgie Griffin, one of our new members. The winner, (again) Wilna du Plessis with 36 points, and second, Deidre Clarke, with 34.
League: Gowrie Gals League team finished third in the annual Midlands Ladies league. Such an achievement for relatively new golfers. Huge thanks for Phil Simmons for his mentorship and encouragement. Wilna du Plessis, the league captain, deserves a medal for being an unflappable, conscientious procurer of players for matches. A tough job! (Rumour has it that the league team will no longer be limited to 8 players.) The biggest thanks goes to all the team members for your tenacity, determination and commitment.
