An Interview with Jonathan Menteath

Jonathan Menteath - Director of Golf - Gowrie Farm

From humble beginnings as a young caddie to a career that’s taken him across the globe, Jonathan’s journey in golf has been shaped by passion, purpose, and a deep respect for the traditions of the game. Now based in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, he brings a strategic, thoughtful vision to Gowrie Farm – blending world-class golf with community-centred values. We asked Jonathan a few questions to better understand his story, his hopes for the club, and what makes the Gowrie Farm experience so unique.

BACKGROUND & JOURNEY

Q: Tell us a bit about your journey –  how did your career in golf begin, and what has kept you passionate about the game over the years?

Jonathan: My golf journey started off quite humbly. I began by caddying for a family friend and was later gifted a set of clubs by another. Watching them play sparked something in me, and I quickly fell in love with the game. I was always active in sports and received a scholarship to attend Westville Boys High, where cricket was initially my main focus but by the age of 14, golf had taken over. At 15, I made the KZN U19 team, and the following year I captained the side after winning the KZN U19 Junior Champs. Golf has always been my first love, and I’ve been fortunate to turn that passion into a career – first by qualifying for the Sunshine Tour in 2005 and then joining the PGA in 2006.

Q: You’ve worked at some incredible clubs around the world – what drew you to Gowrie Farm specifically?

Jonathan: I’ve always had a deep respect for the traditions of the game, and that’s exactly what drew me to Gowrie Farm. It’s a course built on heritage and integrity which is an authentic reflection of what golf is meant to be. So many modern courses feel overly “manufactured” for lack of a better word, but Gowrie is the complete opposite. It’s raw, natural, and at times, wonderfully unforgiving. That’s the essence of golf… You take the good bounces with the bad, just like in life. Gowrie Farm embraces that philosophy. It pays tribute to some of the greatest courses and designers in the world, from Pinehurst and Merion to the classic Scottish links. I grew up playing at Durban Country Club, where my grandfather was a member for over 50 years, so those traditional values run deep for me. Gowrie Farm feels like home in that sense… It stands for everything I love about the game.

Q: After years abroad, what was it about South Africa, and particularly the Midlands, that felt like the right next chapter for you and your family?

Jonathan: For us, the decision to return was all about family and the Midlands – well, it represents everything we were looking for: community, connection, and a quality of life that’s hard to match. South Africa is an incredible country, full of character, warmth, and breathtaking places to call home. The Midlands, in particular, is one of the most beautiful regions in the country. It offers a slower, more meaningful pace of life, and we couldn’t be happier living in such a serene and inspiring setting. It felt like the perfect place to put down our roots again.

VISION & CLUB DIRECTION

Q: What excites you most about your new role at Gowrie Farm?

Jonathan: From day one, it was clear the trustees were thinking long-term with the intent to invest in meaningful growth – and that vision really excited me. I’ve been mandated to grow Gowrie Farm, and we’re already rolling out some incredible projects:

  • Nine new luxury lodges (18 rooms total)
  • A wellness pavilion
  • A holistic, high-performance Golf Academy
  • A dedicated Caddy Foundation
  • Enhancements to the newly completed 18-hole championship course

There’s real momentum here, and I believe we’re reshaping the golfing landscape in the Midlands. Gowrie Farm is on its way to becoming a must-visit destination – not just for South African golfers, but for players from around the world.

Q: How do you see Gowrie Farm’s golf offering standing out in the South African landscape – and globally?

Jonathan: There’s truly nothing like Gowrie Farm anywhere in South Africa. What sets us apart isn’t just the philosophy of “golf as it is meant to be played,” but the course design itself, particularly the greens complexes, which are both challenging and captivating. Our bunkers and greens are unlike anything else in the country, offering a playing experience that’s as strategic as it is enjoyable. If you’re looking for an authentic, Scottish-inspired golf experience – look no further than Gowrie Farm. It’s a course that honours the traditions of the game while offering something genuinely unique to both local and international golfers.

Q: You’ve overseen six DP World Tour events and numerous Sunshine Tour tournaments – do you foresee any DP World Tour or Sunshine Tour events being hosted at Gowrie Farm’s Golf Course in the near future?

Jonathan: Absolutely! We’re thrilled to be hosting our very first Sunshine Tour event right here at Gowrie Farm. The pro-am golf series, ‘The Vodacom Origins of Golf’  will take place from 10 to 14 September 2025, and it marks an exciting new chapter for us. It’s a testament to the quality of the course and the direction we’re heading in. We feel enormously proud to be putting Gowrie Farm on the map as a championship venue!

Q: What do you believe will be implemented at Gowrie Farm in the next 3-5 years that will attract both national and international golfers and guests?

Jonathan: Over the next few years, we’re laying the groundwork to transform Gowrie Farm into a world-class golf and leisure destination. The addition of nine new lodges which will offer 18 beautifully appointed rooms, will allow us to welcome more guests and enhance the overall stay-and-play experience. Wellness is another key focus. With a dedicated wellness pavilion under construction, we hope to offer guests a more holistic experience.

As our newly completed 18-hole championship course matures, it will continue to evolve into one of the finest layouts in South Africa – especially with its distinctive design features and natural charm.

We’ve also launched a high-performance Golf Academy that will attract aspiring players from around the country and beyond.

Everything we’re doing is about elevating the experience while staying true to the spirit of Gowrie Farm. I believe golfers and guests alike will find something truly special here!

Q: What do you think the X factor will be at Gowrie Farm in the next 5 years – the distinct quality or characteristic that will set Gowrie Farm apart from its national competitors e.g. Arabella?

Jonathan: Gowrie Farm’s X factor will always be our commitment to the philosophy of “Golf as it is meant to be played.” That ethos is infused into every aspect of the experience – from the course design to the architecture, the décor, and the level of service. It’s this authenticity and attention to detail that sets us apart. While others may focus on scale or spectacle, we remain committed to preserving the essence and integrity of what makes Gowrie Farm unique… and that’s what I believe keeps people coming back!

THE GOWRIE FARM EXPERIENCE

Q: For someone who hasn’t visited before – how would you describe a day out at Gowrie Farm? Whether its on or off the course.

Jonathan: Whether you’re walking down the fairways or soaking up the surroundings, a day at Gowrie Farm is something special. If you’re out on the course, you’re in for an authentic golfing experience – the layout is thoughtful, the greens are demanding, and every hole tells its own story.

Off the course, there’s just as much to enjoy. The atmosphere is warm and relaxed, with beautiful views, fresh Midlands air, and a real sense of community. You can unwind at the clubhouse and enjoy wholesome &  hearty meals. Take a walk through the property and who knows what rare species of bird you may see! Or you can simply sit in comfort on a sunny (if not sunny, definitely cosy) glassed terrace that overlooks the lake and golf course. It’s the kind of place that provides perspective in our busy everyday lives. It can also remind you why you fell in love with the game of golf OR why you needed a weekend away!

Q: What do you believe are the three main things that currently attract people to Gowrie Farm?

Jonathan: I’d say it comes down to three things: our people, our course, and our setting. We have a very special team here at Gowrie Farm and I feel privileged to work daily with such special people. There’s a genuine warmth in the way we welcome guests, which creates a strong sense of community. Our Scottish-inspired course offers a unique and memorable golfing experience that’s hard to find anywhere else in the country. And then there’s the tranquillity of the Midlands… it’s a beautiful setting that is both peaceful and grounding.

Q: What is the feature hole on the current course and why?

Jonathan: Rather than having a single feature hole, Gowrie Farm is defined by a series of standout features that will excite and challenge any golfer. Our 3rd hole green complex is modelled after the famous Road Hole at St Andrews, while the 4th draws inspiration from Augusta National’s iconic 12th hole par 3. The 5th pays homage to the wall at North Berwick, and our 9th hole features a green that’s a tribute to the classic Postage Stamp green at Royal Troon. These design elements create a course that is rich in character and rewarding to play!

Q: Phil Simmons, a Master PGA Professional elevated the club to new heights over the course of 6 years (2019 – 2024) – what do you believe was the biggest contribution Phil made to Gowrie Farm – golf specific or in general?

Jonathan: Phil is a true legend of the game in South Africa, and his name alone brought instant credibility and gravitas to Gowrie Farm. His presence elevated the club from the moment he arrived, and you could see it in the growth of our rounds, the energy in our competitions, and the number of members who took up lessons.

He wasn’t just a brilliant player. Phil was a passionate teacher who genuinely wanted others to improve. Phil passed on his knowledge generously, inspiring members and guests to play better and love the game more. That legacy of excellence and encouragement is something we’re incredibly grateful for, and it will continue to shape Gowrie Farm for years to come!

Q: How do you see the golf course fitting into the broader Midlands experience –  the Midlands Meander, the scenery, the lifestyle?

Jonathan: The golf course blends perfectly  into the Midlands landscape. When you’re walking the fairways, it genuinely feels like it’s always belonged here. With its natural contours, farm-style charm, and unspoilt views, Gowrie Farm reflects what the Midlands is all about – raw beauty that’s simple to enjoy in many ways. It’s not just a place to play golf. It’s a place where friends and families come together – where the pace is a little slower and we can be fully present, cherishing special moments to make them last longer.

Whether you’re teeing off at sunrise or enjoying a cold draught on the clubhouse verandah, it’s all part of the lifestyle that makes the Midlands Meander so special. The course has added to the beauty of the Meander, while staying true to its roots.

GOLF PHILOSOPHY & COMMUNITY

Q: How has your global experience – from Georgia (USA) to Mauritius – shaped your approach to golf leadership and club culture?

Jonathan: What I’ve learned through my global experience is that, no matter where you are in the world, it all comes down to people. Whether it’s the immaculate fairways of Augusta National or a perfectly prepared eggs benedict at Gowrie Farm, everything we create is about enhancing someone else’s experience of life.

This perspective has shaped how I lead. I believe in creating a culture of mutual respect and shared purpose. We work together as a team to build something meaningful. At Gowrie Farm, I want our members, guests, and team to feel that they’re part of something special. We’re not just running a golf club. We are creating memorable experiences for those who choose to live in or visit the Midlands, and ourselves. And if we can do that while having fun and uplifting each other along the way, even better.

Q: Can you provide more insight into the Scottish heritage at Gowrie Farm? How would you identify the Scottish roots being reflected in the course, décor, and service/hospitality?

Jonathan: The name “Gowrie” itself is a direct nod to our Scottish heritage, tracing back to Perthshire, Scotland. In fact, Gowrie Farm was originally registered in 1858 by John King, a Scottish settler – making it the very land upon which the village of Nottingham Road would eventually grow. Interestingly, there was already a golf course here in the 1920s, so when we reintroduced the game in 2008, it felt like a return to its roots – 150 years after the original farm was established!

You’ll see the Scottish influence throughout the property, especially on our new 18-hole championship course. The design draws heavily from the great Scottish links: think bold bunkers, intricate greens complexes, and a layout that honours the natural contours of the land. Even our clubhouse architecture reflects that heritage, with its rough-hewn stone walls and country charm reminiscent of a traditional Scottish club. Most importantly, the spirit of the game here reflects that same philosophy: walking the course, playing the ball as it lies, and embracing golf in its purest form. It’s a tribute to where the game began, and a reminder of why we play it.

Q: What would you say are the 3 biggest lessons you’ve learned in your career so far that would be instrumental in the enhancement of Gowrie Farm’s experience – both on and off the course?

Jonathan: Firstly, pursue excellence in everything you do. Small details make a big difference. Secondly, I’ve learned that great things can come from humble beginnings. You don’t need massive budgets or flashy facilities to create something memorable. With vision and passion, even small ideas can grow into something exceptional. And finally, make sure people are having fun – our Gowrie Farm team and our golfers and guests. If our staff love what they do and our members feel that energy, it creates a culture people want to be part of. We are more than just a golf course, and a lodge – we are a community of people who want to share our piece of treasure with those who come to appreciate it.

Q: You’re known for your passion for coaching and you’ve recently launched the Gowrie Farm Golf Academy. What have you learned since launching the academy and do you foresee it expanding further than the Gowrie Farm? If yes, what does that expansion look like?

Jonathan: One thing is clear… There is genuine passion for golf in the KZN Midlands!  People of all ages are eager to learn, improve, and engage more deeply with the game, which bodes incredibly well for our Golf Academy and what we’re building here. For now, our focus is on delivering the best possible coaching experience at Gowrie Farm through partnerships with local schools. We want to strengthen our foundation before looking beyond. That said, there’s definitely potential for the academy to grow in the future. Being based in an area surrounded by some of the country’s top schools puts us in a great position to expand our reach and develop young talent. Long term, we’d love to see the Gowrie Farm Golf Academy name associated with quality coaching across South Africa. But it all starts with doing things exceptionally well right here at home!

Q: What role do you think a golf club like Gowrie Farm can play in growing the game and building community?

Jonathan: I believe our role can be as big as we choose to make it. While we’re not based in a major city, that actually becomes part of our strength. We have the opportunity to position Gowrie Farm as one of South Africa’s premier golfing destinations.

It’s also vital that we work in collaboration with neighbouring clubs like Bosch Hoek, Victoria Country Club, and Champagne Sports. By supporting each other and building a regional golf circuit, we can strengthen the game in the KZN region, and make it more accessible and appealing to both newcomers and seasoned players.

At its heart, golf is about connection. And that’s where Gowrie Farm already plays a central role. From local tournaments to shared meals at the clubhouse, we’re one of the social hubs of the Nottingham Road, and wider Midlands, community. There’s still so much potential to grow a KZN golfing community, create more inclusive experiences, and introduce new players to the game in a way that feels welcoming, fun, and community-driven.

PERSONAL INSIGHTS

Q: What’s your favourite part of the course so far –  and maybe the most underrated hole?

Jonathan: I’m a big fan of the template greens on holes 3, 4, and 9. They each bring a unique challenge and a real sense of character to the round. I also love the North Berwick-inspired stone wall feature, which adds a touch of heritage. What really keeps the course interesting for me are the greens complexes – they challenge your mindset and keep you strategising from the first hole to the last.

As for the most underrated part, I’d say the back nine often surprises people. The stretch around the lakes is incredibly beautiful and peaceful and it’s a part of the course that really showcases the natural charm of the Midlands.

Q: Is there a piece of advice you always come back to –  whether in golf or life?

Jonathan: Take it easy, don’t take things too seriously. Whether it’s golf or life, I’ve found that a calm mindset makes all the difference.

Q: What are you most looking forward to in the months ahead – professionally and personally?

Jonathan: I’m really looking forward to spending more time on the course – both coaching and playing. There’s nothing better than helping others improve while continuing to enjoy the game myself.

Q: One word –  how do you feel when you’re on the Gowrie Farm premises?

Jonathan: Inspired. There’s something about the environment, the people I work with, the rich history, and the shared sense of purpose that lifts you the moment you arrive.
