Playing the 16th Hole at Gowrie Farm
Playing the 16th: Precision Over Power
Almost every great course features a drivable par-4, and Gowrie Farm has a couple. The 16th, however, stands out as a true risk–reward hole, where restraint and accuracy are often rewarded more than brute distance.
A Tempting Challenge
On paper, the par-4 16th invites ambition. For longer hitters, the green is within reach, presenting an opportunity to attack. In reality, the hole demands careful decision-making, as danger frames both sides of the fairway and green.
The Sensible Option
Most golfers will choose to play the hole conservatively. An iron off the tee, kept short of the penalty area that juts into the left side of the fairway, sets up a controlled second shot. From there, a short iron approach leads into an inviting — but notably narrow — green.
Accuracy Is Everything
The margin for error on the 16th is slim. Shots that stray left or right are heavily punished, making precision the defining requirement from tee to green. Positioning off the tee is crucial, and commitment to the intended line is essential on the approach.
Risk and Reward
While the aggressive line may tempt, the hole consistently rewards those who respect its design. Choosing placement over power often leads to better scoring outcomes and avoids unnecessary trouble.
