Wednesday Tradition: Martin Whitcher at Gowrie Farm

Every Wednesday morning, as mist settles over the rolling hills of the KZN Midlands, a familiar figure arrives at Gowrie Farm Golf Course. Martin Whitcher — veteran professional golfer, coach and mentor — makes his weekly journey to the estate, returning to the fairways to share a lifetime of golfing knowledge with members and guests.

It’s a ritual that speaks to more than coaching alone. It is a return shaped by legacy, mentorship and the passing on of the game.

A Call Rooted in History

Martin’s return to regular coaching at Gowrie Farm was no accident. It came at the invitation of Golf Director Jonathan Menteath, himself a former student of Whitcher’s High Level Academy — South Africa’s first premier high-school golf academy, which produced a generation of accomplished amateurs and professionals, including European Tour winner Thomas Aiken.

Jonathan understood exactly what Martin could bring to Gowrie: not just technical instruction, but a deep understanding of the game shaped by tradition, discipline and experience. On a links-inspired course that rewards thoughtful shot-making, Martin’s approach feels perfectly at home.

A Career Shaped by Golfing Legends

The Moment That Sparked a Career

Martin Whitcher’s journey began in 1964, when a nine-year-old boy stood watching an exhibition match in Rhodesia. Two legends of the game — Dennis “Hutchie” Hutchinson and Bobby Locke — were visiting his home club. Hutchinson’s round of 62 left an indelible impression.

“At that moment,” Martin recalls, “I knew I wanted to become a professional golfer.”

That single afternoon lit a spark that would define his life.

Passing the Game Forward

Learning Among the Greats

Nine years later, Martin was serving his professional apprenticeship in London, competing in under-25 tournaments across Britain and Europe. At Little Aston in Bristol, he entered the Lord Derby — his first professional event — where he watched Dale Hayes dominate the field, a performance that announced Hayes’ arrival on the international stage.

Those formative years exposed Martin to the standards required at the highest level of the game — lessons that would later shape his teaching philosophy.

The Brews Connection

Another thread in Martin’s story lies with the Brews family — golfing royalty in South Africa through Jock and Sid Brews. That connection became personal when Martin married into the extended Brews family, deepening his ties to a lineage that has influenced the game for generations.

It reinforced something Martin came to understand deeply: golf is a game passed forward — through families, mentors and shared experience.

Coming Full Circle

In 1979, Martin’s journey came full circle when he succeeded Dennis Hutchinson as head professional at Kensington Golf Club. Fifteen years after watching Hutchie inspire him as a boy, Martin found himself stepping into his hero’s role.

It was during these years that his passion for coaching fully took shape, eventually leading to the founding of the High Level Academy. Martin believed great golfers weren’t built on mechanics alone, but through mentorship, discipline and an understanding of the game’s traditions.

Coaching with Legacy at Gowrie Farm

Wednesdays at Gowrie

Now, decades later, Martin’s Wednesdays at Gowrie Farm feel both fitting and nostalgic. After a day spent on the range and course, he often stays in lodge suites named Hutchinson, Hayes and Brews — names that represent pivotal moments in his life and career.

Each week, members who book coaching sessions benefit from instruction grounded in experience, shaped by encounters with legends, and refined through years of teaching at the highest level.

“It’s all quite nostalgic,” Martin reflects — not in sentiment alone, but in purpose. The legacy he once received is now being passed forward.

Coaching with Legacy

Lessons with Martin Whitcher are not simply about improving swing mechanics. They are about understanding the game — reading the course, managing risk, and developing the thinking golfer’s mindset.

Golf Coaching on a Links-Inspired Course

On a course inspired by traditional Scottish design, Martin’s coaching philosophy feels especially relevant.
